With 700+ VPN servers to choose from, it's one of the smaller VPNs compared to giants like Surfshark and NordVPN, but don't let that fool you. Worldwide locations mean that there is plenty of geographical coverage for accessing content on streaming services.

Mullvad VPN Security
Mullvad's motto is 'you have a right to privacy' - and so its intentions are clear from the very beginning. It's there to protect you and keep your online activities private. The company believes that privacy is a universal right, and that's why they have created a product packed with features for one affordable price.
Mullvad has security features for every level of user. It provides as standard is more than adequate, but advanced users can also tweak additional settings to their preferences. Firstly, there is 256-bit AES encryption which is practically impenetrable, so you never have to worry about phishing attempts, hackers, or malware. Mullvad also uses two excellent VPN protocols, Wireguard and OpenVPN, both of which are recognized as the best in the VPN and cybersecurity space. What we particularly like is that Mullvad uses IPV6 and is one of the few to do so. IPV6 is the latest version of IP address and is regarded as more secure than its predecessor, IPV4.
An always-on security feature means Mullvad will automatically connect every time you have an active internet connection. If the VPN connection drops, Mullvad will reconnect without any manual intervention. Are you worried about the few seconds between the connection dropping and being reestablished? Don't be. The network kill switch will block internet access if the VPN drops too, so you're never left unprotected or exposed.
Mullvad is one of the few VPN providers to request no personal details from you whatsoever. Instead, choosing to use a unique number as your identifier. In addition, the company has a strict no-logs policy and takes your online privacy very seriously. This means that none of your browsing history is stored and shared with third parties, and neither is your true location or IP address. Mullvad also doesn't store your DNS requests, timestamps, or bandwidth usage. In fact, if you want to protect your data and enjoy completely private internet access, Mullvad is an obvious choice.
Despite having the highest levels of security, Mullvad goes one step further in encrypting your internet traffic by routing it through a secondary server. This feature is called Bridge Mode but is also known as double VPN with other brands. You will need to visit the advanced menu to get Bridge Mode enabled, and when you do, you will need to select your entry server and your exit server (bridge server). In a nutshell, doing so will make you twice as hard to identify. Also, keep in mind that it can slow your VPN connection down, so if you plan on streaming or downloading, we recommend that you disable Bridge Mode.
As far as a VPN provider goes, Mullvad VPN privacy is the best it gets. Most of the highlighted security features can be easily accessed in the app menu with little-to-no manual configuration. You can, however, dive deeper into the advanced settings if you wish to. For example, the advanced menu allows you to customize the VPN protocol settings, such as the Maximum Segment Size for OpenVPN and the Maximum Transmission Unit for Wireguard. This is a fantastic extra for power users, but also not something you need to worry about if you're a beginner.
Mullvad VPN Features
There are over 750 Mullvad VPN servers, covering worldwide locations like Australia, Canada, The UK, The USA, Hong Kong, Japan, and others. Perhaps most impressively of all is that Mullvad works in China and can overcome the strict censorship in the country thanks to the Shadowsocks proxy, something many other VPNs can't do.
The speeds on the server network also make this a reliable VPN for data-heavy activities like file sharing and streaming. In fact, its performance when it comes to streaming is one of the main features of Mullvad. You can binge on your favorite Netflix series or BBC player content quickly and easily, with no interruption, thanks to Mullvad's powerful servers and speeds.
Mullvad's apps come with plenty of valuable features for users, all designed to make for a great VPN experience. Split tunneling is a prime example of this, and again is something not available with all VPN providers. Split tunneling means that you don't have to keep constantly switching your VPN on and off as you access different apps on your device. For example, you may need to be connected to a US server to access specific content on streaming sites, but this may mean you can't use local services like online banking or news websites. In addition, with split tunneling, you can choose which apps bypass the VPN tunnel and which don't.
There is a Mullvad app for most popular devices, operating systems (more on this later), and a single Mullvad VPN account that allows you to connect up to five devices simultaneously. This way, you can protect everything you own or share your subscription with friends and family. There are no dedicated IP addresses with Mullvad, and you will be assigned a random shared IP every time you connect. This is the better option from a privacy perspective as it is near impossible to separate your internet activity from anybody else on the same IP address.
Don't forget about the 30-day money-back guarantee feature too. This way, you can look at how Mullvad works and whether or not it's suitable for what you need. If it isn't, you can get your money back without any issues.
Customer service is where the features are lacking. Unfortunately, despite the many Mullvald VPN features, no live chat support is available on the website. It's a shame that something so small could be missed, as on-demand support can be precious. There are plenty of helpful user guides and FAQs to read through for help, or you can contact the Mullvad support team via email, but responses can be slow.
