SaferVPN claims to be the fastest and simplest VPN on the market. The provider offers all of the features necessary for a decent VPN but it is fraught with technical issues, slow speeds, and a lack of advanced features.

Even though it may not be the best VPN service on the market, SaferVPN offers an array of excellent features. There are well-designed SaferVPN clients for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, as well as browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. There is OpenVPN support with SaferVPN too, meaning you can set up the SaferVPN app on routers and other devices that do not typically support a VPN connection.

SaferVPN boasts a decent server network with over 1300 servers across more than 50 countries. There is customer support with SaferVPN via 24/7 live chat and email too in case you run into any issues while setting up or using the SaferVPN service.

SaferVPN Security

75%

SaferVPN offers a clear no-logging policy which states that the company never logs or monitors user internet activity traffic. SaferVPN reassures users that whatever they do online is private and anonymous. The SaferVPN website features a no-log page which explains that SaferVPN doesn't store user source IP addresses, DNS queries, accessed VPN IP address, personal internet data, user browsing history, or metadata.

Even though this may sound reassuring, we would like to see the SaferVPN VPN service offer more details as it is difficult to know what it means by "metadata" and "personal data." Moreover, the Unlawful Activity section of the SaferVPN Terms of Service suggests that if a user violates SaferVPN's rules, it may disclose profile details, email addresses, VPN usage history, accessed materials, IP addresses, and internet traffic data. This is worrying as it seems to indicate that SaferVPN is capable of storing a significant amount of user data.

In the SaferVPN client, there is an option to change between different VPN protocols including OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, and PPTP. We would recommend using OpenVPN where possible as it is the most secure VPN protocol available. It is open-source too, which means that it has been heavily scrutinized by developers for potential weaknesses or leaks. In the SaferVPN client, you can enable the VPN to automatically connect if you utilize untrusted or unknown Wi-Fi networks.

There is an integrated SaferVPN kill-switch too, to cut your internet connection if the VPN fails for any reason. This ensures that no unencrypted information or your real IP address becomes exposed. Without a kill-switch, if the SaferVPN dropped, this data may be accessed by hackers, cybercriminals, the government, malicious advertisers, and your internet service provider (ISP). A kill-switch ensures you are always protected, even in the case that the SaferVPN fails.

However, with SaferVPN there is no option to choose between OpenVPN TCP or OpenVPN UDP connections or to set up an OpenVPN port. Although the SaferVPN client usually notices if the VPN connection drops, it may take a few seconds before it reconnects. This means that you may be left unprotected for a few seconds, which is somewhat worrying.

Also, if the SaferVPN connection fails due to an OpenVPN issue, the client simply shows a "Connection Failure" message on the interface instead of warning you with a clear notification. SaferVPN won't attempt to reconnect either, meaning that your device is unprotected until you notice the issue. The kill-switch should be able to resolve the issue, but the SaferVPN kill-switch seems to be somewhat unreliable which is concerning.

SaferVPN Features

SaferVPN may not be the most powerful VPN on the market but it does offer a host of impressive features. SaferVPN offers apps compatible with a wide range of devices and operating systems including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, Chrome, and Firefox. There is OpenVPN support too, meaning you can manually set up the SaferVPN service on routers and other devices that do not typically support a VPN connection.

There is the option to activate SaferVPN automatically if you connect to an unsecured or unknown Wi-Fi network. This is an extremely useful feature if you travel or connect to public Wi-Fi hotspots in cafes, hotels, or gyms. Such networks are typically unsecured and vulnerable to attacks by cybercriminals and hackers. SaferVPN will ensure your online privacy and security even on unsafe Wi-Fi hotspots.

There is 24/7 customer support with SaferVPN via live chat and ticket in case you need assistance while setting up or using the VPN app. The SaferVPN server network is decent too, with over 1300 SaferVPN servers spread across more than 50 countries worldwide. The SaferVPN servers appear to be operated by WLVPN, the company that offers white-label VPN services to a host of providers.

There is limited torrenting support on the SaferVPN Canada, Netherlands, and Spain servers. However, it is good to know that there is P2P file-sharing support available with SaferVPN for torrenting fans. SaferVPN supports a range of secure protocols including IKEv2, OpenVPN, L2TP, and PPTP. The is a detailed section of the SaferVPN website that explains the benefits and weaknesses of each protocol too.

The SaferVPN one-month rolling contract is relatively expensive, at $12.95 a month. However, the monthly SaferVPN subscription price drops to $5.49 on the 1-year option, and if you commit to a 2-year SaferVPN subscription the price will drop further, to just $2.50 a month.

Even though we would usually advise against opting for a long-term subscription plan, the SaferVPN long-term subscription plans are so cheap that it is not much of an issue. For example, IPVanish offers a 1-year plan for $77.99, while with SaferVPN you can get 3 years for just $10 more.

However, regarding the SaferVPN free trials, things become somewhat confusing. Previously, SaferVPN offered a 1-day free trial, but there is now no mention of this on the SaferVPN website.

If you do want to avail of a SaferVPN free trial, try downloading the SaferVPN mobile app first. Once the trial period has expired, SaferVPN offers a range of payment methods including credit card, PayPal, and more. Bitcoin is, unfortunately, no longer a payment option.

There is a 30-day money-back guarantee with SaferVPN too, for additional peace of mind. This means that you can test the SaferVPN product for free for a month before committing to a paid subscription plan.

How Much Does SaferVPN Cost?

SaferVPN offers a range of pricing options. As with any VPN service, opting for the shortest-term SaferVPN plan is the most expensive option. If you sign up for the SaferVPN 1 month plan, you will be paying a pricey $12.95 a month. However, longer-term commitments to SaferVPN are rewarded with significant discounts. If you sign up for one-year with SaferVPN, the price will drop to $5.49 a month. For two years, SaferVPN costs $3.29 a month, and if you commit to three years, the monthly SaferVPN subscription price comes in at $2.50.

Despite that we would typically recommend that users avoid a long-term subscription plan with a new VPN, the SaferVPN subscription prices on their longer-term plans are so cheap that this is a minor issue. For example, a 1-year subscription plan with IPVanish comes in at $77.99 when paid upfront, whereas you can receive 3 years with SaferVPN for as little as $89.99.

The SaferVPN policy on free trials is somewhat confusing. SaferVPN used to offer a 24-hour free trial, but this no longer seems to be available.

There is a 30-day money-back guarantee with SaferVPN too for additional peace of mind. This means that users can test the SaferVPN product for a month before committing to a paid subscription plan. If you are not happy with the SaferVPN service before the month is up, you are entitled to a full refund thanks to the 30-day money-back guarantee.

Does SaferVPN Have a No-Logs Policy?

When choosing a VPN provider it is necessary to ensure that that provider is committed to protecting the online privacy and Wi-Fi security of its users. Therefore, it is important to carefully read and analyze the no-logging and privacy policies offered by SaferVPN.

The SaferVPN website offers a clear no-logs policy which states that it will never monitor or log a user’s VPN network traffic information. SaferVPN makes it clear that whatever users do online will remain private and anonymous. The privacy policy on the SaferVPN website offers further detail and assures that SaferVPN does not store source IP addresses, DNS queries, accessed addresses, personal online activity data, web browsing history, or metadata.

Although this may sound reassuring, the SaferVPN is not as detailed as the privacy policies offered by the top VPN providers on the market. The SaferVPN policy does not fully explain what it means by ‘personal data’ and ‘metadata,’ which is concerning.

The SaferVPN security and privacy policy’s small print raises further issues. In the ‘Unlawful Activity’ section of the SaferVPN Terms of Service, the provider states that if a user violates the SaferVPN rules, the company may reveal details about that user’s profile, email address, VPN use history, shared materials, IP address, and web traffic data. While this will likely not occur if you abide by the rules, it is troubling that SaferVPN has the ability to log a significant amount of private user data.

Is SaferVPN Easy to Set Up?

Setting up the SaferVPN app is quick and simple. All you need to do is enter your email address, follow a link in an email, create a password, and choose the relevant SaferVPN app download link. There are SaferVPN apps for a range of devices and operating systems including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. There are also well-designed SaferVPN Chrome and Firefox browser extensions for an easy connection to the VPN servers straight from your browser.

Once you have clicked the download link, the SaferVPN app should download in a few seconds. The SaferVPN client has a simple interface for a smooth user experience. You can choose to connect to the best available SaferVPN VPN server in terms of location or choose your preferred server location from a list of SaferVPN VPN servers. However, beyond that, the SaferVPN app offers a basic experience. There is no option to view all SaferVPN server locations within a certain city or country, nor does the app offer location server load times or ping statistics. Although there is a search box to help you find your desired SaferVPN server.

You can also save your favorite SaferVPN server location in the Favorites section for a quick connection later. It is necessary to note SaferVPN client does not automatically use desktop notifications to alert users when they are connected to the VPN, or if the connection fails for any reason. This can cause issues if the connection drops and you don’t realize it until you access the SaferVPN app interface. However, this can be altered in the settings by activating notifications with a single click.

There is a range of other SaferVPN features too, including the option to change between protocols including IKEv2, L2TP, or PPTP. You can also have SaferVPN automatically connect if you access untrusted or unsecured Wi-Fi networks, such as those in cafes, hotels, or airports. There is a kill-switch too, to cut your internet access if the VPN fails for any reason. This is hugely important for your Wi-Fi security, as it will ensure that no unencrypted data or your real IP address ever become exposed.

There is, however, no option to choose between OpenVPN UDP or OpenVPN TCP connections with SaferVPN. Nor is there the option to manually set up an OpenVPN port. There is a further issue with the SaferVPN apps. The SaferVPN client offers the option to connect to an ‘Automatic Location,’ which should typically connect to the closest available server. However, during testing, the SaferVPN client failed to access the closest server location which is disappointing.

Also, if you have not activated notifications, the SaferVPN apps won’t show the country that you are connected to. It may choose an unexpected SaferVPN server location and you may only notice when you are blocked from local apps, streaming services, or websites. Connection times are relatively fast and most SaferVPN server locations take between 2 and 8 seconds to connect, depending on your chosen VPN protocol.

Disappointingly, if the SaferVPN connection drops due to an issue with OpenVPN, the SaferVPN apps will simply display a ‘Connection Failure’ message instead of a clear notification. They won’t try to reconnect either which may mean that you are unprotected until you realize the issue.

Does SaferVPN Offer a Good Server Network?

Choosing a VPN that offers a decent server network with a wide range of locations around the world will ensure a good user experience. An extensive list of server locations will ensure no single server becomes overwhelmed by too many users, which may result in a significantly reduced download speed.

SaferVPN offers a decent number of over 1300 servers across 50 different countries to ensure complete internet protection, freedom, and fast connection speeds no matter your location.

SaferVPN offers a range of European server locations in the United Kingdom, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, France, Denmark, Hungary, Albania, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Germany, Romania, Norway, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Moldova, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine.

In the Americas, SaferVPN provides access to high-speed servers in the United States (Los Angeles), Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Chile. In Asia, there are SaferVPN servers in India, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, and Taiwan. There is a limited number of Middle Eastern and African-based servers in Israel, South Africa, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates. SaferVPN also offers 2 server locations in Australia and New Zealand.

Is SaferVPN a Good Streaming VPN?

Many people choose to download a VPN in order to access the geo-restricted content on streaming services from anywhere in the world. SaferVPN claims to offer access to content in locations across the world, that would not typically be available in your geographical location.

Despite the fact that SaferVPN boasts about its ability to overcome all geo-restrictions, internet restrictions, and VPN blocks, the provider failed to stream Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, which is disappointing. However, SaferVPN was successful at bypassing restrictions on BBC iPlayer and United States Netflix libraries, which is good news for streaming fans.

Does SaferVPN Offer 24/7 Customer Support?

In case you run into issues while setting up SaferVPN on your devices or you struggle to stream your favorite overseas television shows and movies, there is a range of helpful SaferVPN customer service guides available on the website with a host of information. There are SaferVPN 24/7 customer support options via Open Ticket and Live Chat too, ensuring that a SaferVPN support agent is always on hand to resolve your queries.

On top of the customer service options, each SaferVPN payment plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee too for additional peace of mind.

How Does SaferVPN Work?

SaferVPN creates a secure encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote SaferVPN server location to ensure completely safe internet access. This allows you to connect to a SaferVPN network in another country so that it appears as if you are accessing the world wide web from that country, enabling you to overcome geo-restrictions, internet restrictions, and censorship.

Your VPN network traffic is protected by the SaferVPN encrypted tunnel so that no one, including your Internet Service Provider (ISP), hackers, cybercriminals, snoopers, third parties, the government, or malicious advertisers can gain access to your information. A VPN such as SaferVPN is the strongest level of online protection available.

Although VPNs were originally utilized by technology experts or business employees to securely access their office network from a remote location, more and more people are choosing to download a VPN to take advantage of the powerful Wi-Fi security benefits.
